Our Story

Bunyad Foundation: Transforming Generations Through Grassroots Action

The Bunyad Foundation was established in 1994 with the unwavering commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty and illiteracy across Pakistan. Initially conceived as a modest effort to promote non-formal education among women in rural communities, the organization has grown into a nationally recognized catalyst for social transformation. The word “Bunyad” means “foundation,” and this name reflects our core mission—to build a solid base of education, empowerment, and opportunity for those who have been historically marginalized.

Over the past three decades, Bunyad has launched thousands of community-based initiatives in literacy, health, gender equality, disaster management, and sustainable development. Our early focus on literacy evolved into an expansive program that included over 5,000 non-formal schools, early childhood education centers, and vocational training institutes. We have empowered more than 2 million individuals, particularly girls and women, by helping them access the tools needed for self-reliance and leadership in their communities.

Our approach is rooted in community mobilization, policy advocacy, and capacity building. From launching nationwide campaigns to eliminate bonded labor to advocating for inclusive educational reforms, Bunyad has worked in partnership with local communities, government agencies, and international donors such as UNESCO, UNICEF, the World Bank, and the European Union. Through these collaborations, we have helped shape legislation, introduce technology-based learning, and improve the lives of those who are often left behind.

Our story is also one of resilience. In times of crisis—such as the devastating floods in Pakistan—Bunyad was among the first organizations to deliver emergency relief, establish temporary learning centers, and support families through trauma recovery. Our staff and volunteers, many of whom come from the same communities we serve, embody the spirit of solidarity and action that drives our mission forward.

As we look to the future, Bunyad continues to innovate by integrating digital literacy programs, expanding climate resilience initiatives, and advocating for girls’ education in remote and conservative regions. Our vision is a Pakistan where every child can read and dream, every woman can lead and thrive, and every citizen can live with dignity and purpose.

We invite you to join us on this journey. Whether you are a supporter, volunteer, policymaker, or educator—your voice, your hands, and your heart can make a difference. Together, we can continue building the foundation for a more equitable and empowered Pakistan.
