Since its inception, the Bunyad Foundation has been at the forefront of promoting literacy and education in Pakistan, particularly focusing on marginalized communities. A significant contributor to this mission has been its longstanding partnership with UNESCO. Together, they have launched and implemented numerous projects aimed at enhancing literacy rates, empowering women, and fostering community development across the country.
Launched in 2009, this innovative program targeted young and adult females who had recently completed basic literacy courses. Recognizing the challenge of literacy retention, the program utilized mobile technology to send daily SMS messages covering topics like health, numeracy, religion, and general knowledge. Participants were encouraged to read, write, and respond to these messages, reinforcing their literacy skills. The success of the pilot led to subsequent phases, expanding its reach and incorporating interactive applications like the “e-Taleem App” for enhanced learning experiences.
In 1998, Bunyad, with UNESCO’s support, established Community Learning Centers in some of Punjab’s most deprived districts. These centers served as hubs for education, vocational training, and community development. Emphasizing community ownership, the CLCs empowered local populations to take charge of their educational needs, leading to the establishment of additional centers funded and managed by the communities themselves.
Tailored for rural women aged 15 and above, the AFFLP aimed to provide functional literacy training, enabling participants to improve their quality of life. Beyond basic reading and writing, the program incorporated health education, vocational skills, and awareness about rights and civic responsibilities. The initiative also introduced Mobile Rickshaw Libraries, bringing reading materials and digital resources directly to communities, further promoting a culture of reading and continuous learning.
Recognizing the potential of mobile technology in education, Bunyad and UNESCO initiated a pilot project to train teachers through mobile phones. Participants received SMS-based lessons covering various educational topics, allowing for flexible and accessible professional development. This approach not only enhanced teachers’ skills but also demonstrated the versatility of mobile learning in diverse contexts.
Building on the successes of past initiatives, Bunyad and UNESCO continue to explore new avenues for collaboration. Future projects aim to:
The partnership between the Bunyad Foundation and UNESCO stands as a testament to the transformative power of collaborative efforts in education. Through innovative programs, community engagement, and a shared vision for a literate and empowered Pakistan, this alliance continues to make significant strides in addressing educational disparities and promoting lifelong learning.
