Bunyad Foundation recognizes literacy as a basic human right and a powerful tool for personal and social transformation. Since its inception, Bunyad has been at the forefront of promoting adult literacy in Pakistan, particularly targeting rural women and marginalized communities who were denied the opportunity of formal education in their youth.
The Bunyad Adult Literacy Program (BALP) was launched to fill this critical gap. Designed with a grassroots approach, BALP empowers illiterate adults—especially women—by teaching them basic reading, writing, and numeracy skills. The program not only opens doors to lifelong learning but also enhances confidence, financial autonomy, and community participation.
With these goals, the program addresses the intergenerational cycle of illiteracy, building more informed, resilient, and productive families.
BALP uses a learner-centered curriculum developed by Bunyad, validated through years of fieldwork and research. Key features include:
Courses are typically delivered over a six-month period in community settings such as homes, schools, or local centers.
One of the most impactful aspects of BALP is its community-driven model. Bunyad engages local elders, community leaders, and families to ensure buy-in and participation. Key elements include:
This participatory approach increases ownership and the likelihood of continued education after the formal course ends.
Since its inception, Bunyad has helped over 400,000 learners, the majority being women, gain functional literacy. Graduates of the program:
Evaluations show improved quality of life, financial management, and self-confidence among learners.
The success of the Adult Literacy Program is made possible through strong partnerships with national and international stakeholders, including:
These collaborations provide technical support, training, funding, and innovation to scale and deepen program impact.
