Mobile Based Post
Literacy Programme >>
Bunyad is
supported by UNESCO for the implementation of project "Mobile Based
Post-Literacy Programme". The adults from 15 to 25 who are already
semi-literate from BLCC Centers are required to provide Post
literacy through distance base Mobile Literacy Programme. The female
population of 15-25 years age group needs special attention as they
are prospective mothers of future generation. The project
activities will therefore be concentrated on the literacy of adult
females of 15-25 age groups. This four month project is concerned
particularly with the literacy retention problem among the youth
population and the problem of keeping them motivated to further
consolidate their functional literacy and some basic technical
skills which could help them in their daily household activities and
for supplementing family income like PCO. |
|
Child
Involved in Camel Race >>
Bunyad was thus engaged due to its substantial experience in
social development the communities. A survey focused on secondary
data of missing facilities was taken out in social services in 8
Union Councils (7 in RYK and 1 in Muzaffar Garh) to develop an
integrated community program for holistic development. The Project
had a challenging disposition to deliver and to achieve results
enquiring multiple partnership and cooperation from the point of
re-integration (as children return) to the rehabilitation stages.
Although giving the protection rights to children is a Govt.
responsibility, the provision of community level support requires
civil society intervention. Thus, project’s like this where
community response for the rehabilitation and prevention of
trafficking/re-trafficking is of utmost importance and we were able
to strengthen it. |

Banking for Brighter future >>
UNICEF has been entered into a two year project with Barclays Bank,
“Banking on Brighter futures” aiming to increase economic potential
for vulnerable families involved in bonded or exploitative forms of
labour. Promoting financial independence and protecting children
from exploitation, rehabilitate child & adolescent labourers through
accessing basic literacy & vocational training and money management
skills are the major interventions. It also includes access to
micro-credit style loan schemes for tools and equipment and a pilot
‘On-Site’ education programme (non-formal education-NFE centres) for
child labourers. In this project the main area of child labour is
being focused on bonded labourer families in Brick Kiln sector. |
|
Brick kilns
Project >>
Government of Pakistan in collaboration with the ILO is pooling
significant resources for the elimination and rehabilitation of
bonded labor from all those sectors. Bunyad are also active in
exploring their role. The issue has a number of socio-economic
implications and its solution does not lie in any single strategy
but in economic uplift, social involvement and educational
breakthrough of the bonded families. The need therefore is to devise
a comprehensive strategy which should not only cover all aspects of
the problem but would also have a sustainable solution. Bunyad is on
to work at District Lahore. Where there are 120 Brick kilns
registered with the Labour Department of the Government of Punjab.
We identified around 30 Kilns. Now we are working for their
rehabilitation. |

Save Mother Health
& New Born Baby>>
The basic aim is to mobilize the communities particularly the
males to improve the present health situation. As PAIMAN have
already done some ground work for the problems identification in the
project area, we would initiate our activities in the project area
through awareness campaigns, mobilization, networking of Community
Health Worker and formation of Community Health Committees. Close
contact with Dais and TBA from the same community will be increased
through CHWs and will be tried to update their knowledge.
Sensitization events will be organized to sensitize the community
about root causes and try to solve those problems by their own ideas
and solution. For sustainability purpose the CBOs/CHCs would be
registered as CCBs with EDO Community Development of the Multan &
Ghujar Khan districts. This project supported by USAID with support
of JSI/PAIMAN. |

Gender Justice through Musalihatt Anjuman>>
The aim of MAJA is to provide justice to the people especially women
at union council level. People can get quickly and inexpensive
relief through Musalihat Anjuman. Musalihat Anjuman also helps to
release the burden of cases on the courts. Women particularly can
get benefit from MA as it is easy to approach them. Bunyad
Foundation is providing such services for Advocacy and awareness
campaign of MAJA in District i.e. Bahawalpur and Bosan Town Multan.
Bunyad Foundation has done various activities in this regard to make
people aware about the benefits of MA. This Project funded by UNDP
with support of local Govt. |

Community Learning Centers>>
As BUNYAD is contributing to achieve EFA goals through provision
of NFE and literacy to out of school, dropouts, adolescent girls,
street working and children involved in hazardous laboures their
siblings and women in above 300 villages of 23 districts of Punjab
in collaboration with ILO, UNESCO, Department of Literacy and NFBE
Punjab, Bait ul Maal, District Governments and local
philanthropists. BUNYAD strongly believes on mainstreaming of
learners and sustainability of these efforts through local community
organizations. On the basis need assessment we want to mobilize and
organize communities to establish CLCs in Haizabad, Sialkot, Lahore
(rural), Multan, Khanewal and Sheikhupura districts. |
|
Literacy Centers >>
Bunyad is well known for its community interventions throughout
Punjab and especially in the non-formal education. It is considered
to be the pioneer in the Non Formal Primary and Secondary Education.
Moreover its adult literacy programmes are considered to be the most
effective one in reduction in the illiterates’ number in Punjab.
During last thirteen years it has implemented many projects through
its network of NGOs/CBOs in Punjab. |
 |
|
|
 |
Micro Credit >>
The project will provide Micro credit facilities & training of
women in a number of areas including tailoring, embroidery,

continue such Trainings/Workshops for future as well, because
training provide cutting edge to participant over others as he/she
can coup up with latest developments in respective field whether its
environment or other techniques. |
 |
|
|
 |
Education and
Literacy>>
Education is universally accepted as being crucial in the
development of any country. Pakistan has a very low literacy rate
and poor state of education. The corner stone of BUNYAD’s approach
is learning & since its inception it has developed and sustained
programs for non-formal education and literacy. With EFA being the
main goal, many areas of Literacy + Education were taken up by
Bunyad including the improvement of Public schools, involving SMC’
in school development, Formal school’s of BUNYAD, Teachers Training,
network of CLC’ , material development, CD’S developed for
post-literacy and posters for promotion of learning. All these
projects are community based. BUNYAD is an active member of the
Regional Consortium of ARTC–UNESCO and PEW-Pakistan Education Watch. |

Non Formal Basic
Education Project>>
BLCC programme of Non Formal Education which was first stated in
1993-with 20 ILM centers has grown into a massive programme of basic
education for girls and boys. It has included a number of projects
supported by different donors. Bunyad in different districts
continues to provide education to boys and girls through these
projects in which also include micro credit to improve their
leadership abilities . Majors objectives are of all programes to
provide free education to the children of villages especially
girls. To empower the communities in promoting education.
BLCC has been providing Non – Formal education for children 6-14
years of age in the programmes of NEF. teachers salary and the
inputs such as books, furniture and stationary have been provided by
the NEF, monitoring & teachers training is carried out by BUNYAD The
communities participate in the programme through VECs and FECs who
meet regularly , monitor and facilitate the smooth functioning of
the centers .The venue is also provided free of charge by them. |

|

|
Non
Formal Primary Education>>
A wide range of policies has been pursued to promote primary
education in the country, both in the short and long terms, over the
last three decades. However, they have failed to achieve universal
primary education. It was in this context that Bunyad realized the
need to develop a replicable model with the objective of ensuring
100% primary enrollment besides ensuring its retention and improved
facility of education. The central focus is on literacy and primary
education to enable to achieve the objective of education for all.
Usually strategies are two pronged. One is the orientation toward
motivating the community including parents and influential people,
while the other focuses on teachers. Its strategy is to bring
attitudinal change in values that civil society attaches to
education. Its implementation is carried out through social
mobilization of parents.
Bunyad has been actively carrying out programmes of non formal
primary education (NFPE) for children of 6 to 14 years of age since
1994. emphasis has been given particularly to female education, as
imperfect childcare due to lack of education is one of the major
causes of high infant mortality rate in Pakistan.
BLCC has been providing Non – Formal primary
education for children 6-14 years of age under the programme of NEF.
Learners are provided free primary education up to class 5. The
teachers salary and the inputs such as books, furniture and
stationary have been provided by the NEF, monitoring & teachers
training is carried out by BUNYAD The communities participate in the
programme through VECs and FECs who meet regularly , monitor and
facilitate the smooth functioning of the centers |

Adult Literacy >>
Literacy is more than just being able to read and write The
traditional definition of literacy is considered to be the ability
to read and write, or the ability to use
language to
read,
write,
listen, and
speak. In modern contexts, the word refers to reading and
writing at a level adequate for
communication, or at a level that lets one understand and
communicate ideas in a literate
society, so as to take part in that society. The
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) has drafted the following definition: "Literacy" is the
ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate,
compute and use printed and written materials associated with
varying contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning to
enable an individual to achieve his or her goals, to develop his or
her knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in the wider
society." In modern times, illiteracy is seen as a social problem to
be solved through education. The main objective of these programmes
are to provide literacy to they could become active members of
society and gave social protection to children who were out of
school due to non existence of government schools in their
respective areas or less staff in government schools or absentees of
school teachers or because of poverty.
Bunyad’s successful
model of functional literacy specifically focuses on girls and
women. The program combined literacy with life skills and more than
twenty thousand adolescent girls were made aware about health,
nutrition, reproductive health, infant mortality and financial
security in addition to their learning programs.
In Noor Adult Literacy Centers Bunyad Foundation
established 30 non- formal education centers with the name of Noor
Adult Literacy centers in 15 villages of Lahore district. Almost 750
learners were enrolled in these centers, The age groups is 12-40.
For economic empowerment of communities 3 pre-vocational training
centers were also established in the same area. |

Health
Project >>
Women’s health has been a
strong focus of Bunyad Foundation as maternal deaths are one
of the highest in the World. According to Dr. Sher Shah, Karachi, we
loose 3 women an hour in child birth or one every 20 minutes, a
situation which must be taken seriously as hardly any health
services are reachable in the rural area and maternal deaths are
quite rampant leaving children bereft of their mothers. Less then
30% women during child birth have trained birth attendants. Less go
to the hospital. It is said that nearly 9 lac women have illegal and
unsafe abortion which ends in nearly 13% women dying during Child
Labour malnutrition, constant bearing of domestic violence are few
reason’s of maternal mortality. Coupled with this is the lack of
confidence women have in reproductive health, it is estimated that
between 3.5 to 4 million are the annual births, estimated that every
minutes about 8 to 10 babies are born. Bunyad is making a
concentrated effort to make rural women communities aware about the
relevance of safe mother hood and importance of child spacing. With
formation of women health committees, women have been motivated. |
|
|
HIV/AIDS >>
Awareness given to teacher’s about prevention. A large study
on HIV/AIDS has been undertaken by BF more then 26,000 sex workers
and injectable drug users interviewed. FPAP few centers have been
started in Sharifpura, Tajghar and Talawala Village Lahore. Health
conditions are terrible for rural women and children, as focus by
the public sector in only on the curative side. We have already
targeted 15,000 families. Working closely with the EDO’s Health,
specially of Hafizabad, has shown positive results. Bunyad has also
energized parents for immunization and polio injection’s. Holistic
health strategy is taken by Bunyad Foundation. |

Women
Empowerment & Development Projects>>
Research has indicated that the status of women
in 77 out of the 147 counties, in the economic sector is getting
little or no recognition, her heavy work in the field is giving her
no rumination, 33% only are able to read and write therefore
sidelined begin in development, 13,441 committed suicide (Post Dec.
2006) most crimes against her person not reported, the rural women
has few options becoming apathetic to her situation, barely
surviving due to the pressures of her situation, Bunyad Foundation
has made an effort to build the capacity and vision of the women in
there areas where they have there NFE centers, focusing on the
mothers, sisters and siblings of their learners. Bunyad has been
working in the rural communities of Punjab for more than 8 years
having a number of programmes for helping the marginalized,
particularly women and the children. In this connection a project
termed as Women’s Empowerment for poverty Alleviation was
undertaken, which combines functional literacy, skill development
and micro finance components to bear upon the social and economical
situation of rural women. Illiterate women are provided credit to
undertake micro enterprises to supplement their household incomes,
along with literacy and skills training for social & economic
empowerment.
Bunyad also initiated a program with the support of NCHD/Election
Cell by the name of Democratization Project, worked in 5 districts
and worked in 42 UCs. Aim of this program was to create an enabling
and politically pluralistic environment through awareness and to
sensitize and develop 2400 women as politically aware volunteers
through information, education and communication about the
democratic, electoral and political process and to ensure women
enhance participation by 25% and to educate and train 1000 girls
students (potential voters) in politics and electoral process as
voter / candidate in the forthcoming national election during the
project period. In 2006 Gender Justice through
Mushaliat Anjuman Project, initiated in Bahawalpur District donated
by LGR & UNDP, Object was, To assist women and other vulnerable
sections of society in improving their security and promoting their
rights and lawful entitlements. Bunyad’s efforts in fostering the
combined Role of Police, Judiciaries and political parties were seen
as making the activities of MAJA successful. A large number of
cases were registered regarding gender violence. Worked in 107 UCs |

Credit: For Poverty
Alleviation >>
As a developing country Pakistan has a large
illiterate population more then 65% living below $ 2 daily, 18% live
on less then a $, ! A very young population 43 % below the age of
14, Thereby largely the population is of dependents, women mostly
are not active players in the economic sector nor getting any
rumination for their work, infact women’s work, does get any
recognition, no weightage for the numerous work, she undertake’s on
the families farm, looking after livestock, weeding, planting rice,
threshing rice/ wheat, in numerable house hold chores, bearing
numerous children and yet she is given no support for her many
duties. Purpose of these programmes, are to empower the poorest of
the poor segment of the society, particularly women and children.
Bunyad has taken various initiatives. Providing micro credit
facility to poor rural women is one of them. The main objective is
to empower women by raising heir income earning capacities, self
employment and organizational skills, create a self reliant and
sustainable credit programmes. The poor women were
provided with small credits to undertake micro enterprises to
supplement their household income, along with literacy and skill
development for their social and economic empowerment. |

Children
Protection & Rehabilitation >>
The Corner stone of Child rights is to make them
literate through literacy, primary education them on to other
development sectors. Regarding Combating Child Labours projects
Bunyad has been actively involved in combating child labour in
various industries such as carpet weaving, soccer ball making,
surgical instruments, street working children as well. Awareness has
been created among children, parents and communities about hazards
of child labour and the rights of children. In order to Carpet
weaving industry, which is the largest cottage
industry in Pakistan. The industry is moving from urban to rural
areas .It is estimated that 80 percent of the total productions of
hand-knotted carpets in Pakistan takes place in the remote villages
of Punjab .Most of the looms (estimated 70-90 %) are believed to be
installed in homes. These projects supported by ILO-IPEC aims to
take into account the special circumstances of children in carpet
weaving. The basic purpose of these projects, to prepared children
academically and in other aspects for mainstreaming into the
Government Schools Linkages are to be developed with the
pre-vocational and technical education facilities associated with
the carpet projects.
The United Arab Emirates - UAE has more than two million camels and
camel races are among the most popular sports events in the country.
The camel races take place every winter, from October to April, on
various tracks throughout the UAE. His Highness Sheikh Zaied Bin
Sultan Al Nahyan, along with other rulers of the emirates, attends
most of the races. Many innocent children have suffered terrible
injuries after falling off the camels. Bunyad is working to
rehabilitate children who are trafficked as camel jockeys. The major
objective of these projects is to improve the livelihood
opportunities for families of repatriated camel jockeys along with
other community members to arrest future risks of trafficking of
children. A key component of the projects is to raise awareness
among communities and stakeholders regarding trafficking, health,
education and environment. These types of projects are supporting by
UNICEF. |

Early
Childhood Care & Development Project>>
With 43% of the population below the age of 14 and 65%
living below the poverty line, the condition of our children is
quite precarious. Few reaching 5 years of schooling, infant
mortality is quite high and having few options for a happy, health
future. Most children are helping to support their families, the
girl child often as early as 3 years helps in taking care of younger
sibling, in the rural areas children are helping out their families
on the scanty land holdings. Bunyad strongly felt responsible to
give these children a chance to have a better future. Starting in
1994, with NFE centers for early dropouts, specially the girl child,
going on to take NFE to scale, also experiencing the spin off
centers on embryonic early child hood care program, all supported by
UNICEF – saw these marginalized rural girls 35,000 strong to get on
to the learning cycle, 30% of these girls moved on to next higher
level of learning, 30% taking on same occupation and 30% falling
into marriages and early family responsibilities – yet all armed
with confidence to take on the challenges of life.
Unicef Pakistan also supported a project ECCD in Punjab during 2001.
For demonstration a community based Poilet Project had initated in
one Union Council Ghloatian Kalan Tehsil Daska of Sialkot district
with the collaboration of Child Care Resource Center of the colledge
of Home Economics, Lahore and BLCC. |
