Objective and Main Function of Institute of Community Education  

  • Develop the capacity for training the personnel needs for EFA. Master trainers for the training of literacy teachers and teachers at Non Formal Primary Education, Social Mobilizer / Monitoring Extenders needed for the motivation and mobilization of communities to take on the literacy, Non formal education and supportive community development work.

  • Review the literacy readers used by BLCC and revised and update as needed.

  • Design and develop post literacy materials for the neo-literate and for libraries at community and union council levels.

  • Review and revise the literacy models used by BLCC and design and develop new material as needed, focusing on the “ownership of the literacy centres by the communities”.

  • Design and develop the martial for the use of non formal primary school teachers such as handbooks, science kits etc. and materials for pupils such as supplementary readers, workbooks etc.  

  • Design and field test short term courses for community representatives in areas as needed by them with a view to developing a diploma course in community development, especially in areas such as non formal education for children, girls and adolescents; child labour and micro enterprises.

  • Develop professional links with BERTIs  to improve the quality of their services to the communities. They serve as well to utilize BERTIs to support ICE programmes and activities. Mobilize more community level centres through the BERTIs as the hub of rural activities.

  • Develop links with other education institutes in the province, which may support ICE programmes, and activities in various fields.

  • Develop a research capacity which is needed to support the above objectives.
